Are you in a healthy relationship? Here's 5 ways to tell!
One of the biggest worries when in a relationship is how to tell if it is healthy. Sometimes we can ignore bad and good signs when we are caught up in all the emotions and feelings a relationship brings. Luckily, a healthy relationship is very easy to spot. Read on for five green flags of a healthy relationship.
1. You can communicate openly and regularly.
Like the old adage says, communication is key! One big plus on the healthy side is being able to convey your thoughts and feelings easily with your partner. If something is bothering you, you can comfortably tell them. Being afraid to say the wrong thing or being afraid of your partner isn't healthy. If you can freely communicate with them, you are on the right path!
2. You feel like you can trust your partner and they trust you.
Trust is one of the most important elements in any kind of relationship. It is especially important in intimate ones. Everyone wants to feel trusted. It's a very normal way to feel. Trust is a two way street. If you want to be trusted, you must trust. Being in a healthy partnership is no different. If you are doing things to hide or be deceitful, you are not only hurting yourself, you are hurting your partner. And vice versa, your partner knows you don't trust them. That hurts. So reach down deep and trust.
3. You feel respected and honored.
Just like with trust, everyone wants to feel respected. Feeling disrespected is not a fun way to be. A healthy relationship should never make you feel that way. Even if your partner doesn't agree with you all the time or vice versa, they (and you!) should make you respect their opinions. Some arguments or disagreements can easily be smothered by agree to respect the other person for who they are and what they believe.
4. You feel safe.
Feeling safe is one of the most important emotions we can have. It's in our nature to want to feel protected and sheltered. In a healthy relationship, you should never feel afraid or in fear of being harmed. Both you and your partner want the same thing. They want to feel safe.
5. And last but not least, you are both honest to each other.
Honesty is the key to almost everything, especially within yourself. If you are not honest with yourself, you cannot be one hundred percent honest with someone else. Being dishonest will put you on the fast track to destroying yourself and your relationship. Honesty ties in with trust. To be trusted, you must be honest, even if it is hard to do.
All five of these tips can be used in any kind of relationship you might have. It is not only important to utilize them with a significant other, they can help you in friendships, family, work, you name it. That being said, these are not the only five ways to tell if you are healthy. There are many, many ways to tell. The key ingredient is happiness. If you are happy, things will fall into place.
